“Talent is a combination of Competency, Skill and Attitude” - Mr. Milind Kulkarni, Head HR, Essar Oil Ltd. Refinery Division

Mr. Kulkarni while interacting with the audience at IIM Raipur’s First HR Confluence on August 25, 2012 (Theme: Managing Talent for Competitive Advantage: From Identifying and Acquiring Talent to its Retention) emphasised on the challenges faced while retaining and developing employees.

He began his address by drawing responses from the audience of what Talent is and described talent as comprising of the skills, competency as well as attitude. He elaborated that in the volatile economic time of today and with the presence of attractive job profiles it was getting difficult to get employees stay and get involved in their work. What is required during such times is to identify who really was the critical talent and direct programs to retain and engage such employees.

He elaborated on two philosophies that are deeply ingrained in the Essar culture, first that of being Employee Engagement and the second being Total Rewards Model. Both of these he believed emphasised on customization of career paths of the employees by taking into consideration their aspirations. Such a model that takes care of the individual aspirations and connects it with the organisations aspirations is effective in retaining and engaging employees while also developing them.
