Mayor Interacts With Students of IIM Raipur
 

Dr. Kiranmayee Nayak , the Mayor of Raipur visited IIM Raipur Campus on 30th August 2011 and had an interactive session with the PGP students.

Dr Nayak discussed the challenges faced by Municipal Corporation of Raipur as the city prospers on its rapid growing pace. The mayor elaborated on the activities undertaken by the municipal corporation and the next stage of its evolution into Mahanagar Palika. She highlighted the initiatives being currently undertaken by the Municipal Corporation. The key projects include water augmentation which involves cleaning and maintenance of water bodies of Telibandha Lake and extending the project to 40 wards of Raipur city.
 
She also mentioned the proposal of creation of Integrated Waste Management System which would go a long way in addressing the problem of waste management.

Later in the question answer session, she explained the challenges faced by her as a public official working on a limited budget. To overcome the financial constraints assistance is required from the state and central government to tide for the rest of expenses. The various revenue increasing options involved implementing a pilot GIS survey for a block to identify the houses which must be

taxed. She pointed out that the revenue target for this year was an ambitious 150 cr and now revenue collection agency has been being given monthly targets in terms of coverage and revenue to attain the same.
 

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. B S Sahay , Director IIM Raipur expressed the willingness on the behalf of students to provide consultation on the various projects that the Corporation wishes to undertake in the future. This saw an overwhelming response from the students that followed an hour long discussion on the various facets of working and challenges faced by the corporation. The areas identified included creating awareness in Raipur regarding importance of proper public sanitation. In addition to this, there was discussion on preparing the corporation for the future in its endeavor to make Raipur a truly word class city and the need to adopt the best practices across the globe and create a vision document for the same. The mayor also highlighted the importance of PPP model in effective management and delineated the key projects now being undertaken under this model. 

On concluding note Dr. Nayak said, “Corporation needs to connect with the youth of the city in order to create a vibrant Raipur which can be the face of emerging Chhattisgarh. We are amidst discussions of instituting a ‘Best Citizen Award’ for the citizens who have made extraordinary contributions to the city. I urge the students of IIM Raipur to come up with the ideas and guidelines for the same. Our mission is to project Raipur as one of the best cities to live in India, and create a landmark monument for Raipur which adds to the identity of Raipur as one of the fastest growing capitals of India. “

The visit of the mayor and the initiatives that IIM Raipur plans to undertake are a part of its commitment to work for the growth and development of the state and to be a partner in the quest of the state to become a model for others to emulate.
